Hey tech ladies, welcome to making website magic, our brand new podcast How you doing, Karyn?
Karyn Paige 00:07
I’m doing well. How are you doing? Sam?
Sam Munoz 00:08
I’m awesome. I can’t believe that we are finally starting this podcast. It’s kind of unreal. We’ve been talking about it for months now.
Karyn Paige 00:16
Yeah. And I’m really excited to actually share the behind the scenes conversations that we have on our team meetings with all of our listeners. Me too.
Sam Munoz 00:25
If you guys don’t know us yet. My name is Sam Munoz. I’m the owner and operator of seminars, consulting, we do web design and development. And this is my go to gal Karyn.
Karyn Paige 00:35
Hey, I’m Karyn, I worked as a web developer for someone else consulting, and also tech instruction and a little bit of business coaching,
Sam Munoz 00:43
we are actually kind of expanding the seminars consulting universe and stepping into education, teaching other women how to start businesses, just like ours is specifically with regards to web design, and web development. Making website magic, the podcast has kind of been this big thing that we’ve been creating and thinking about for a long time. And it really is lending itself into the entire sphere of education for us.
Karyn Paige 01:10
Here’s what you can expect when you subscribe to the making website magic podcast, you’re going to hear two women who are talking about what it’s actually like to run a web design business that’s aligned with your vision. So there’s going to be a lot of talk about dreams and having a vision and how you can use your vision to implement and basically like, run your entire web design business from the inside out, which I don’t know if you know this, but that might be really different from a lot of other like business and web design podcasts that are out there. So we’re bringing something a little bit different to the audio sphere.
Sam Munoz 01:48
Yes, and and let’s be honest, like one of my favorite things that you said is that it’s run and hosted by two women, the industry for podcasting about web design, and development is severely lacking in female voices and centering women in this space. But the thing is, there are tons of amazing women web designers out there who I believe and Karyn believes like, we need a place for us all to have community and conversations. And that is such a big part of this podcast is making a space for us to have our unique perspective and points of view, and sharing what it is like to be not only a web designer and developer in the online world, and all of that, but also as a woman, because it’s frankly different than the experiences that our male counterparts might be having in this space. So I’m really stoked to be able to bring our perspective and our unique expertise and womanhood into this space.
Karyn Paige 02:46
So we’re going to be definitely telling a lot of stories, episodes are going to be centering around experiences that we’ve had observations that we’ve made, and a lot of unlearning and unpacking different kinds of business advice on how to run a web design business that actually doesn’t really serve web designers. So if you’re into like unlearning things that maybe haven’t been working for you, and really digging into why your web design business isn’t doing what you want to be doing, you’re definitely going to want to keep listening.
Sam Munoz 03:19
I think what’s really awesome is that you and I have had these conversations, since we started working together behind the scenes. And it was really like, every time we talk about it, we would be like, Oh, we need to tweet that we need to put that on Instagram. And finally it became to the point where we’re just like, we keep having these conversations. And you and I love to go deeper with things and not just keep everything surface level, which in the online space, especially social media is all surface. It’s just like, how can I get the likes? How can I get the quick comments, and how can I like, create this message in this bite size form, but we want it to go deeper with each other and deeper into these conversations. Because the truth is like, that’s where the heart and the gold is in business is like that depth and that richness. So I love that we’re able to take those kind of private conversations that we’re having, and now pull it into a public space. Because a lot of us are probably thinking the same things, right? where a lot of us are like, these business tactics aren’t necessarily working, the things that every other online business leader is telling me to do aren’t working for me in this web design and development space. So I like that we’re able to bring all of that out and talk about it more on this podcast.
Karyn Paige 04:25
Definitely also, like you talked about, like digging deeper, but I’m kind of like, let’s also zoom out and like look at the big picture a little bit. And really, like let that inform power approaching things. You know what I mean? Because sometimes when you’re running a web design business, there is a lot of like, okay, let’s just focus on what’s in front of us right now. But sometimes you really have to zoom out a little bit and look at that bigger picture in order to figure out how can I make this business sustainable? And how can this business have longevity? That’s why you have to think about things like that, and that’s why I’m really excited. To talk about.
Sam Munoz 05:01
So I think we should talk a little bit about our individual stories because we’ve each come from different spaces to get to where we are now. For me, I have always liked building websites is actually been something I’ve been super into since I was like a little kid to any of you like 90s kids out there listening, I played Neopets, I played the Sims. And I still do so like, if you’re a Sims player hit me up. But I played Neopets, and on the Neopets website, you could actually build little guilds, right? So you could like write code and HTML and CSS. And that was my first taste into coding and web design and development. And over the years, I kind of, you know, built websites for the Sims, but websites for blogs that I created and all sorts of little things. But it wasn’t until I was about to lose my job, or it was like a week before Christmas or so, in 2017, that I was like, Hmm, maybe I can take this and create a business around it. And then in January of 2018, I had left my job. And I started and I hit the ground running and started building websites. And that was how I got started. And I’ve really not stopped or looked back or regretted the decision since which is really interesting, because, and I know you and I’ve talked about this, Karyn, and I’m sure it’s going to come up in this podcast. But I have had several jobs, where I have gotten to the point where I’m like, What is what am I doing here? Is this am I doing anything important? Am I really, you know, can I really see myself here, and that has never once happened with someone else consulting because I feel so aligned with what I’m doing. I love the clients we work with. I love the projects I get to work on and I feel like this is the thing that I’m going to be doing for the rest of my life and eventually, something we’re going to be handing off to future generations. It’s crazy to kind of look back and realize, oh my gosh, when I was 12 years old, playing Neopets and making websites like how would I have expected that I would get to the point where I’m like now doing this as my job. But I feel so honored to get to wake up every day and do it. So that’s like my story in a nutshell, I’m sure we’ll get into all of like the intricate little pieces and the tears, lots of tears in this podcast. But there’s there’s my little bit
Karyn Paige 07:09
from me getting into web design was totally by happenstance. Basically, I didn’t start coding until I was in my early 30s. I had, like you like done all these different kinds of jobs and really felt very unfulfilled. And also like, what is my purpose, I’m in my 30s. Now, like everything that I’ve been doing up until this point has just been like, in service of me paying bills. But I need more, right? So started coding, self taught, picked up, you know, online classes here and there. And then got to this point where I was like, Okay, now I can build websites. How do I do this as a business? How do I become an entrepreneur. And so I went down that full on rabbit hole of online business coaches and advice and to this freebies, for this opt in sharing information on the internet, just like very much like a cacophony of noise of advice, to a point where I kind of got like, paralyzed in too much learning and not enough doing and certainly not enough discovery calls and not enough clients on the books, right. And it wasn’t until I started working for you as a contractor, where I got to see behind the scenes of a web design business that is thriving, and fully booked out all the time. And my mind was blown. And I was like there is a different way to run a web design business. And the way I’ve been doing it is not the tea like is not viable, sustainable, because I was learning from a lot of online business owners. Let’s be real here. As a web designer, your business is online. But it’s not an online business. And that is a distinction that we need to make, okay, you can’t see this, but we’re snappy. That’s kind of my approach. And honestly, it’s like, I’m really grateful that I like to call it like hit all those trees on the way down the hill. Because that’s why I learned this stuff isn’t working, the stuff that someone else is doing is working. And also like there’s so much about just like dreaming and thinking and refining. And like really stepping back and like looking at that bigger picture. And I wish those are things that I had done. When I first started learning how to code. Now it’s like, I need to tell everybody
09:30
stop what you’re doing.
Karyn Paige 09:33
Stop what you’re doing and think about is this really what you should be doing all that thinking. I’m glad we get to start talking.
Sam Munoz 09:42
And what’s so cool is that I feel like what we’re teaching on the podcast is not follow this framework. And here’s the five steps to doing X, Y and Z. It’s Let’s peel it all the way back to what you want. How do you want to operate in your business? How do you want to find clients in a way that feels authentic? And in alignment with how you want to exist in the world, and then move in that direction. Whereas the online, you know, the typical online business owner advice we get is follow my five step framework, and you’re gonna make a million dollars by selling your $47 product. Like I love to reference that because the number of ads I see on my Instagram feed is just ridiculous. And so that’s what this podcast is really, you know, combating against is let’s take all that and just kind of shove it away. Let’s not listen to that for a minute. And let’s dig into what you want, the direction you want to be going. And then what are some simple, reasonable things that you can be doing that doesn’t include posting every day on social media, you know, every hour, and spending all of your time doing things that you think are moving the needle forward in your business, or you think are, you know, resulting in all of these things and make you feel like, Oh, my gosh, I was so successful, and I did so much today. But then you look at your bank account, and you have 0.0 dollars in the bank. I’m holding my temples right now,
Karyn Paige 10:59
because I know what that feels like. I have been there. And also, I’m really about listening to your intuition and really like knowing what you want, asking yourself the questions, right. And so it’s not here follow my five step plan to become a millionaire. But more about what do you want? And what do you need to do to get there, because some things, there aren’t really like a one size fits all cookie cutter roadmap to success, especially as web designer, because there’s so many different avenues, you can take different clients, you can work with different services you can offer. So it’s really about finding your voice and getting really clear on what your vision is. And so I hope that with this podcast, we encourage our listeners to answer those questions for themselves instead of telling people what they need to be doing.
Sam Munoz 11:49
Oh, yes, empowering people instead of taking their power away. Exactly. One of the things that you just said, made me think about when we were picking the audio for this podcast, when we were thinking about like, what kind of vibe Do we want, which you guys didn’t hear it yet. So you’re gonna have to go to episode one to hear that first intro of the podcast where we have the vibe and the music and everything. But we were thinking about, you know, what kind of feelings we want our listener to experience when they turn our podcast on. And here’s some of the things that we want you guys to be feeling when you’re listening to this. We want you to feel capable. We want you to feel empowered, we want you to feel like you’ve just entered a space where you are given the chance to dream as big as you want to. And you’re given the encouragement to actually go follow those dreams and not again, assume the dreams of us, but take it from the inside out. So we want you to feel all those things. And that’s a part of what we’re doing here.
Karyn Paige 12:40
Yeah, space to dream space to create space to imagine and space to feel inspired by what you’re capable of doing.
Sam Munoz 12:49
Because that’s the point of the magic, right? The magic is coming from within. It’s coming through everything you’re creating.
